Gay games narrative

Video games are an intricate nexus that combines systems and options. These systems include hegemonies of representation and labor structures.

A growing number of mainstream games have gay characters, but they don’t always make it clear. For example, Overwatch and Borderlands allow you to romance same-sex characters but their homosexuality is not part of the story.

Persona 4 received a lot of praise when it was released for presenting a character that was not afraid to be gay. It did exactly that. But it also suffered from a number of tasteless tropes in anime when it came down to its queer characters.

Take the example of the camping scene between Kanji, Yosuke. Yosuke asks Kanji if he has any problems with girls. This is a dehumanizing and hateful question, which implies that being gay should be shunned.

After the scene, there are a number of jokes based on Kanji’s sexuality. This implies that being gay involves preferring women to men. Atlus’ attempts to make fun of the situation still send a dangerous message, that LGBTQ people are predatory people who should force straight people to adopt their culture. It’s a shame, because the game’s storylines examine how toxic masculinity can harm the male protagonist and how to replace it with self-love.

Gay story games

Video games are a great way to portray LGBTQ characters and reflect the societal attitude towards diversity. Video games have diverse narratives, from Kung Jin’s Mortal Kombat character to Makoto Naya’s BlazBlue.

These games immerse players in virtual worlds and capture them with their heartfelt stories. These stories are inspired by real-life experiences, and they explore themes like love, identity and acceptance. These games are particularly meaningful to LGBTQ+ players, as they can relate to their stories and experiences.

Some gamers, however, have expressed disappointment at the portrayal of queerness within the game. They claim that it is homonormative and “disappointing”. Other gamers have criticized both the gameplay and sex of characters. Dream Daddy remains popular despite these complaints. It does not, however, address intersectional queerness and queer sex issues in any meaningful manner.

Blizzard Entertainment’s first-person-shooter Overwatch features a number of characters who have rich backstories, which are revealed by the transmedia content. These narratives were met with praise for Blizzard Entertainment’s progressive stance towards representation, as well as criticism of their execution.

Recently, two of Overwatch’s biggest heroes –Solider:76 and Tracer — were revealed to be gay. Both heroes were revealed through non-game content. For example, a holiday comic which revealed Tracer’s girlfriend Emily.

Discussions of these revelations highlighted the importance of authenticity. This is a concept that entails both the fidelity of the character’s characterization as well as the coherence of Overwatch’s fictional world. The discussion also highlights a feeling of belonging among LGBTQ players. These players are constructing an alternative and safe space within Overwatch to belong to. This is similar to how fans and gamers have long created their own spaces of engagement by utilizing fan fiction.

There are many great games that fly the LGBTQ flag without falling into stereotypes or focusing too much on diversity just for the sake it. Borderlands is another game that doesn’t hide its queerness under a layer cynicism.

Borderlands is filled with queer characters, from a gay demon to an fembot. Gearbox made it very clear, even with claptrap as a playable protagonist, that being gay was completely normal and didn’t require constant attention.

Todd Harper’s essay about the Mass Effect series shows how gay romances are a common narrative in game worlds. While Harper’s essay focuses on Shepard as a “closet narrative”, it also highlights how the game has created space for romance and happy endings for LGBT characters, which is important when viewed in the context of an historically vilified genre.

Video games are incorporating innovative gameplay mechanics with diverse LGBTQ+ themes. Indie game developers are at the forefront of this movement, offering gamers experiences that relate to their own lived experiences. From fantasy worlds and immersive storytelling, games like these offer a sense connection and empowerment.

Axton the splicer from the popular Borderlands franchise wasn’t originally meant to be bisexual. However, due to coding mistakes when reviving characters, Axton would say flirtatious phrases whether it was a male or female character that was being revived. Gearbox has accepted the accidental bisexuality and canonised the character as such in many of their DLCs.

Other games have a more explicit portrayal of a gay character, such as Riot’s ‘Caitlyn’ and ‘Vi’ who are in an intimate relationship, or ‘If Found …’,’, which is an independently developed game about a woman’s trans experience. It highlights both the euphoria as well the difficulties she faces during her transition.
