With recent social movements and prominent athletes speaking out, gay sports have come a long way since the first Gay Games.
But what about video games? 179 video games feature LGBT characters. The majority are women. Gay male protagonists are rarer though. When they appear, the sexuality of their characters is usually a plot-point.

Dragons Dogma 2 does not disappoint. It is a role-playing game that allows you to make your own choices. However, if you happen to choose to have your party composed entirely of muscular fantasy men, the game doesn’t just shrug it off — it calls you out on it with a joke that you’re forming a harem. While some players see this as a lighthearted jab at their preference, others aren’t so sure.
It’s true that the game makes comments about parties with only women in them and suggests you’re forming a harem. However, it’s less blatant. Even so, it’s still a little too revealing for some players, especially considering the game is supposed to be playing on a more pseudo-medieval setting. This is a minor problem, and it’s less jarring that Mass Effect 3 making blatantly homosexual comments about Garrus.

Having a gay male character in Mass Effect was huge for the game and arguably made it more accessible to players. It didn’t prevent the homophobic backlash. While many players were excited to see the option, others felt it was a step backwards.
There is a possibility for a perception change with the release and re-examinations of the trilogy. BioWare should take advantage of it.
Mass Effect 3 introduced the gay romance option to Shepard, despite hints in earlier games that Jack was homosexual. Steve Cortez is a shuttle captain who joins your team. He’s an interesting choice as a Shepard romantic interest. Steve Cortez was only available for this game. His storyline was also underwritten in comparison to other options. In the end he didn’t stick around, but at least he gave you a chance to explore your sexuality. It’s interesting to note that female Shepard had already two options: Jaal and Liara, though the latter option was only available in the second episode.
Online gay games
Although video games allow players to customize a character’s look, they’re far from creating virtual environments where characters can express their diversity. Despite the fact that some games now offer LGBTQ romance options, others have left it up to interpretation.
For example, Kanji from Persona 4 develops a crush on a woman who is revealed to be a man, but without any in-game scenes that confirm his feelings he’s not considered queer. This is the same issue that arose with Bayonetta, who while being a fuck icon was never actually romantically involved with Jeanne.
Guerilla Games Horizon Zero Dawn broke this trend when it confirmed the sapphic character of its main protagonist in the Burning Shores (DLC) DLC. Although the DLC received the usual review bombing, which is common in many LGBTQ shows, movies, and video games, fans were eagerly awaiting the scene where Aloy & Seyka admitted their feelings to each other. It’s especially important because the game previously let players choose their main character’s gender by choosing to have romances with both women and men.

The Last of Us, Naughty Dog’s 2013 smash hit video game, was adapted by HBO in a way that has revolutionized the storytelling approach to video games. Although not everyone is happy with the choice of making Frank, Joel’s partner, dead in the third episode, the show was still a groundbreaking moment for gay gamer.
After a scary prologue where a scientist on an American talk show predicts the end of the world due to a fungal disease, the main characters in the game are introduced. Hardened survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to the rebel group the Fireflies.
Bill is a paranoid lone scrounger who hides in a boobytrap-protected town. Despite his bitterness towards Joel, he tries to help the two on their journey by offering them a car. Bill is implied to have been romantically involved with Frank, a man who has disappeared. His possession of gay pornography confirms his homosexuality.

It’s no surprise that this game is loved by gay gamers. It is full of hot dudes, traumatized folks and other queer-friendly characters. Plus, the story is pretty good too – it has a lot of melodrama but still manages to be enjoyable.
But the game has its flaws. The game has some difficult companions. For example, the surfer and the tranny have an evil alignment. Then there’s Hexxat, who can’t be romanced by any male protagonist. The game’s attempt to include LGBT themes and other social issues is the biggest problem. It’s almost like bioware tried too hard to appease their audience and ended up harming the game in the process.
Mass Effect 3 allowed gay men to romance Alliance pilot Steve Cortez and Kaidan Alenko. Although it was an improvement on the previous games it still wasn’t inclusive enough. BioWare should do better in the future.
