Dorian the mage, in Dark Ages III’s storyline, is a complex and interesting character. His sexuality doesn’t make him a cliché. Overwatch gay characters and Borderlands playable NPCs are notable examples.

It’s a good thing that independent developers have their own titles to try and change the situation. These independent games, whether they are visual novels or dating simulators, focus on gay themes and characters in an authentic way. One such title is Coming Out on Top.
As its name suggests, the game lets you experience being a college senior gay who’s trying to come out to his two closest friends. This is a dating simulator, yes, but the game also feels like an old-school “Choose Your Own Adventure” book. Like those books, the game lets you choose from a variety of potential men and build relationships with real emotional depth.
Interestingly, while this game has a lot of gay content it was never given a Steam Greenlight pass, and so has been kept out of the mainstream gaming world. The reason for this is likely to be a good one, but some gamers have pointed out that Greenlight has been used by ignorant or homophobic players to downvote offensive content.

From sapphic super villains to coming-of-age queer witches and MLM space defenders, animation has long been a great platform for telling diverse, adult stories. The inclusion of LGBTQ themes and characters is becoming more common in video games.
For instance, Riot Games’ popular multiplayer online role-playing game League of Legends recently added a gay romance between the mage Diana and her partner Leona to the storyline for the first time. Although the story takes place in a fantastical world, it is based on a real-life relationship between two women. This addition is a tiny but important step in achieving diversity and inclusion.
Celeste, an incredibly difficult and rewarding platformer that follows a transgender young girl’s journey to the top of Mount Everest, is another great example of well-developed gay characters. Maddy Thorson is a transgender female who designed, wrote, and directed the game. This adds authenticity and relatability to it.
The Life Is Strange games are a great way to see LGBTQ representation. In the third entry, True Colors, players can choose a bisexual protagonist and have her follow different romantic storylines. Some games, like the Mass Effect series allow players to pursue relationships with the same gender. Some publishers have content restrictions that prevent these options from being available.

Although there have long been gay themes in games – Bioware Dragon Age, with its same-sex options and The Sims man-onman couples – and there’s even a gender-bending Birdo in Super Mario 2, there aren’t that many pioneering homosexual titles.
