Hong Kong hosts the largest LGBTQ sporting and cultural event in the entire world. Participants have expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the great organization of the games and meaningful experiences.

In spite of the popular perception that videogames are reserved for solitary geeks who fire 3D baddies at them, there is a rich and vibrant culture of developers who create interactive realities out of the box. Some of them have a surprising level of queer friendliness.

VA-11 is a bartending game set in the dystopia Glitch, a fictional dystopia where you play Jill. She’s a sarcastic twenty-something reflecting upon her life decisions. Over 19 days of gameplay, Jill serves drinks to colorful customers and listens in on their problems.

Bartending is pretty simple, with only a few options and a tap-based control system. This mechanic is tied to the story in a way that’s not immediately obvious. Making different drinks can change the direction the story takes.

Venezuelan developer Sukeban Games is known for its blending of mechanics and storytelling, and the latest installment in this tradition is VA-11 Hall-A. The studio’s team is largely from the country, which has been suffering under an economic crisis that has led to widespread famine and shortages of medicine.

It is set in 207X and, while it does deal with the usual Glitch City subjects, like corporate repression, fascist government control and corporate repression, it is more concerned with questions of labor and survival. It also features a very strong LGBQT representation and is less inclined to depict violence and other forms of oppression in its characters than some other similar games might be.

Night in the Woods has a lot of punch for a game without jump scares, resource scarcity or dreadful meta experiments. The 2017 indie darling is the story of Mae Borowski. She’s a 20 year old college dropout returning to her dying hometown, Possum Springs, to reconnect with friends from her youth. There are some changes in Possum Springs. The coal industry has collapsed and many secrets have been buried.

Night in the Woods features anthropomorphic characters that embrace youthful frivolity. This may not appeal to older gamers. It’s not uncommon for the dialogue to include slang or jokes that would be inappropriate in other games. However, the characters are so well established it is easy to forgive. Mae’s pesky wit, her best friend Bea’s biting cynicism, and Angus’ gentle deadpan make them easy to connect with and understand.

The main storyline is a trojan horse of a coming-of age tale that surprises the player with themes such as faith, community and class struggle. The game takes you to some pretty wild places – existential terror, God’s nature, and the feeling that living isn’t worth it. But, most of the time, it focuses on building relationships between characters and offering moments of quiet friendship among a group of people trying to make sense of their lives.

2064: Read Only Memories, the brainchild of GaymerX’s team, is a cyberpunk adventure with point-and-click gameplay set in Neo San Francisco. It is a retro-futuristic game that blends retrofuturism, a mature narrative and challenging gameplay in interactive pixel settings. This game embraces its queer identity with gay characters, and a subplot that follows people who are genetic hybrids. The game never attempts to make you feel uncomfortable or uses it as cheap humor. Instead, its quirkiness is natural and charming.

The main story is about a journalist looking for a missing friend, helped by the first sapient ROM — or Relationship Organizational Manager — called Turing. Turing is unique because he has the ability to choose and act on his own. As you put your journalisting skills to work, there are red herrings and twists and turns, and like any good mystery, a bigger threat then you might think at first.

This is a great example of an indie game that feels fully fleshed out in every way. It’s worth the time spent because of the colourful world, the story, the gameplay and the multiple endings. And the 2017 update 2064: INTEGRAL brings a cleaner font, new voice acting (including an excellent performance from the robot himself), an expanded script and a playable epilogue chapter that adds to the already expansive experience.

A down-on-his-luck occult expert is hired to help a Space X-type project step an asteroid from slamming into Earth. It turns out to be a huge artifact that was created during a war of dimensions in Noachian time. It broadcasts psychic stuff and causes people to dismember their families. The book avoids being overly heavy-handed despite its bleak theme. Its world building is less complex than works like Doug Dandridge’s Empires at War but this might work in the book’s favor depending on your taste. Annette, a strong character, bridges The Nameless and George’s early work (many feel like callsbacks to Gog). She also gives agency to the book’s protagonist. Annette also offers a moment’s respite for the reader and protagonist.

The Nameless features an excellent narrator, which makes for a captivating experience. The story is a good one, even though some characters are underdeveloped.

The Nameless (Spanish: Los sin nombre; Catalan: Els sense nom) is a 1999 Spanish horror film directed by Jaume Balaguero in his directorial debut. The film had its premiere at the Sitges Film Festival, in October of 1999. It was a huge commercial success. It was distributed theatrically by Filmax and released directly to video in 2005. In Spain, the film was a commercial and critical success. It won the Melies d’Or award at the International Festivals Federation. It was also nominated for a European Film Award.
