Leather Goddesses of Phobos
Steve Meretzky is one of the most creative minds ever to work in the world of computer games. He’s responsible for everything from The Space Bar to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but he’s probably best known for his work at Infocom, where he helped pioneer a genre called interactive fiction based on adult content and a literary style that could almost pass as poetry. His titillating sci-fi fantasy with 50’s B-movie vibes, Leather Goddesses of Phobos, debuted in 1986 and actually predates the Leisure Suit Larry series by a few years.
The cartoon gay game starts in Joe’s Bar, in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, in 1936, where you are abducted by the Leather Goddesses of Phobos for their final testing of a plan that will eventually enslave mankind and turn Earth into a twisted pleasure dome. You have to escape and save humanity, and you can choose between Barth (a male alien), Zeke (the gas station owner) and Lydia (the daughter of the astronomer who “discovered” Planet X).
Like all Infocom games, it’s a text adventure with humorous overtones; you type in standard commands using a standard text parser to observe your surroundings, move around and pick up items. There are 10 different ‘worlds’ to visit, and they’re connected by black circles that transport you from location to location. Along the way, you’ll encounter a rubber hose, a picture of Douglas Fairbanks or Jean Harlow, cotton balls, a blender and a Cleveland phone book.

Vendetta
Based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore, V for Vendetta is set in Britain in the year 2020, where liberal democracy has given way to a fascist totalitarian regime run by Chancellor Adam Sutler of the Norsefire party. In response to a series of bioterrorism attacks, the government has cracked down on dissent with cameras and secret police watching every move. The resistance leader known only as V is a lonely, single-minded torture victim who wants revenge first and foremost on those who hurt him, but he also believes that overthrowing the regime will restore freedom. He plans to blow up the Houses of Parliament on November 5th, inspired by Guy Fawkes.
Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards
When the gay cartoon game was first released, it caused a media firestorm over its racy jokes and titillation. Nevertheless, Larry’s hormone-fueled escapades remain among the most popular in gaming history. Yes, women are sex objects for Larry to objectify but unlike James Bond and many other fictional womanizers, he doesn’t sexually degrade the women he meets. Moreover, unlike so many male characters in computer cartoon gay games, Larry repulses women rather than seduces them. This makes him a far more wholesome hero than James Bond or most other macho gaming icons.
Designed by Al Lowe, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards is one of the first in his series of cartoon gay porn games. Taking its cue from the text adventure Softporn, the game uses a text parser to accept commands and interact with a graphical environment. It is filled with plenty of risque humor and bodacious babes who are ready to “work out” with Larry.
While later Leisure Suit Larry adventures would wrap their crude point in wildly fanciful storylines, this first gay porn cartoon game was just plain base. Its inclusion of homeless men (who spawn randomly in front of the casino and convenience store) is a particularly callous example of this trend in computer gaming, which has all too often reduced those without housing to sex-object status.

Banjo-Tooie
The lovable bear and bird pair of Banjo-Kazooie were back a few years later with a sequel that largely ignores their history in favour of resolving their ongoing beef with the witch Gruntilda. The two get their revenge in a variety of ways, including kicking around her head in a hacky sack and destroying her skeletal castle on the Isle of Hags.
Rare’s use of interconnected worlds in this gay game with gay cartoons is more than a little ahead of its time. Pipelines course through the Isle O’ Hags, carrying water, oil and Jiggys, while breakable walls reveal secret passages between levels. This level of attention to detail gives the cartoon gay game a feeling of being a fully-fledged alternative universe, rather than simply a collection of levels with similar themes.
In a cartoon gay sex game that is all about rewriting the rulebook for 3D platformers, this approach to level design is arguably its strongest feature. This is particularly true of Cloud Cuckooland, a level that takes the Dadaist ideas behind that movement and applies them to a gay game with cartoons of twist endings that reaches for the sky in its surreal ambition.
Despite its age, this is still a stunning cartoon gay XXX game that offers a huge amount of entertainment. It is also one of the most aesthetically pleasing games to ever hit the N64, although it suffers from an inconsistent framerate that can make even the best parts of the cartoon gay gameplay hard to appreciate.
