Yaoi and Boys Love
Anime gay yaoi is a genre of Japanese media that portrays homosexual relationships between men. It is commonly referred to in the English-speaking world as Boys Love or BL, and it tends to contain graphic sexual content and little plot. However, it is a genre of media that many fans find extremely satisfying.
The term yaoi first emerged in the 1970s and 1980s as part of dojinshi (self-published works) culture, and it came to refer to amateur fan fiction that was primarily focused on male-on-male sex and often parodied mainstream manga and gay porn anime. It was also known for its relatively plotless original narratives and sexual scenarios that often depicted implied or roughly portrayed rape.
In one study, a qualitative survey was used to determine the motives for yaoi media consumption. Several latent factors were identified: Identity/self-analysis, Melodramatic/emotional elements, Dislike for standard romances/shoujo, Pure escapism/lack of reality, and Arousing/sexually titillating. The results showed that female participants scored higher than males on the general motive and on all but one of the specific motives.
Some scholars have argued that the yaoi anime gay sex genre provides a safe space for reliving past traumas. In particular, rape, which is depicted in yaoi as a form of sexual abuse, may help abused victims feel less alone and more validated by their reading experience. However, non-consensual sex in the real world is an inexcusable and heinous act with no justification.

Yaoi and Girls Love
YAoi (pronounced “YOW-ee”) or Boys’ Love is a genre of media featuring romantic and homoerotic relationships between male characters. It encompasses manga, novels, anime and films. The word YAoi comes from the Japanese portmanteau of yama nashi ochi nashi iminashi (, no climax, no point, no meaning), which was a self-deprecating term used in dojinshi culture to refer to amateur fan works that focused on sex to the exclusion of character development and plot. Later, it became the main label for a genre of anime gay porn that focused on homosexual romance and sexual erotica between men.
Although female characters are not typically present in yaoi titles, some studies suggest that women are particularly drawn to these genres for their depictions of gender equality and sexually arousing content. For example, Chou’s qualitative study of Taiwanese yaoi readers found that they were motivated by the desire to challenge social taboos and experience freedom from gender constraints.
Other studies, such as Zhang’s qualitative study of young Chinese yaoi fans, also suggest that women are drawn to these genres for their melodramatic and emotional content. They are often escapist and entertaining, providing a refuge from reality. Moreover, the absence of female characters in these genres means that women can indulge their fantasies about men without the fear of masculine aggression that can occur with straight romances.

Given
Given is an excellent Boys Love anime that doesn’t rely on cheap fanservice or offensive stereotypes. Instead, it presents a story that is deep and realistic. It also features a lot of music, which adds to the emotion of the characters’ journeys. This is what sets Given apart from other anime gay romances.
Given centers around the members of a rock band called The Seasons. The main character is Ritsuka Uenoyama, who meets Mafuyu Satou, a shy student who has an interest in music. He invites the withdrawn boy to join his band and gives him guitar lessons. In the process, they develop a sweet romance and build up their connection with each other.
The story is quite complex and nuanced, tackling heavy themes such as suicide, grief and toxic relationships. It is never melodramatic, even in its most dramatic moments. It has good comedic timing as well, especially in the scenes involving the rock band’s performance.
Another thing that makes Given great is the strong characterization of its main characters. The other members of the band, such as bassist Haruki and drummer Akihiko, are equally impressive. Their backstory and motivations are slowly revealed as the series progresses. There are plenty of tiny but important details that make the characters feel real, and they help to make the romances between them believable.
