Avatar: The Last Airbender
An anime-influenced Nickelodeon series about airbending and an impending world war, Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most positive, innovative things to come out of the fickle medium of children’s animation. Its creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, managed to balance inventiveness with a strong sense of history, philosophy and spirituality. The show’s world was a rich and complex one, and it also managed to incorporate queerness into its midst.
Siblings Katara and Sokka wake Aang from a frozen state, and discover he is an Avatar – a person able to manipulate all four of the Earth’s elements. Aang must enlist the help of his Airbender friends to prevent the Fire Nation from destroying all life on the planet.
The last incarnation of the Avatar is dying, so a new Avatar must rise. The Legend of Korra follows Aang’s successor, a female airbender named Korra, and her journey through the lands of the four nations. The show has had some issues with its representation of queerness, but in general it’s more or less on par with other kids’ shows like DBZ and Naruto.
Most recently, Netflix has announced that it will be releasing a live-action Avatar sequel. The reboot will be directed by M. Night Shyamalan and stars Danny Pudi, Karina Scully, and Jeremy Irons among others.

A Night in the Woods
Despite having a story that goes to some fucking places like existential terror and the nature of God, Night in the Woods is primarily a quiet animated gay game. It’s filled with small scenes between friends enjoying each other, hurting each other, reconciling and teetering on the line between adulthood and childhood that seems precipitously wide these days. Oftentimes these conversations end up taking on serious weight as characters talk about past mistakes or what it is exactly that they want out of life.
Throughout the animation gay gameplay, it’s clear that the developers of Night in the Woods were aiming to create an authentic experience. They’ve succeeded in this, in large part due to the fact that they don’t force any sort of morality onto their characters. The gay animated game‘s guiding philosophy is that “life is a pattern and we can choose how to interpret it”, and the characters are allowed to make up their own minds about what that means for them.
The world of Night in the Woods feels incredibly real, and it’s a testament to the developers that they’ve been able to bring it to life through quirky art and subtle details. It’s also a huge plus that the animated gay porn game has a lot of representation for Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, Non-Binary, and Pansexual people. A lot of games that try to be about something real fall short because they’re too focused on pointing out the obvious.

Hyperventilation
The animation gay porn series combines a sci-fi concept with BL romance in a pristine way. It is a short anime that can be watched in one sitting, with sensible characters. It is an excellent option if you are looking for a gay anime that is both entertaining and erotic.
The main character is a man with a lung condition that causes him to hyperventilate. He is an outcast at school, but develops a connection with the class president after the latter shows compassion for him. Years later, they meet again at a high school reunion and their lingering feelings are reignited.
BL novels typically focus on non-traditional relationships and their effects on the protagonists’ lives. Often, they also feature intense interactions between the protagonists, which can give the reader that same feeling of hyperventilation. These stories are not for the faint of heart, as they feature drama and sometimes rape and murder.
Originally released as a manhwa, Antique Bakery is an 18+ Korean BL anime that features a charming storyline. Its characters are well-developed and genuinely endearing. However, the show is problematic as it fetishizes a lot of nonconsensual sexual encounters. Despite this, the show is worth watching for its sweet storyline and interesting characters. It is available for streaming on HiAnime.

The Owl House
The Owl House is a kids’ show that flies in the face of America’s queerphobic reactionaries. Its Afro-Latina protagonist, portrayal of neurodiversity and surprisingly complex themes set it apart from the pack of Disney Channel fantasy shows—but most importantly, it has some of the best LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream children’s media.
The show follows 14-year-old Luz Noceda, a girl who doesn’t fit what most people would consider “normal” – she’s bisexual, gender nonconforming and more than a little nerdy. When she finds a portal to Boiling Isles, the Demon Realm, and begins studying under the Owl Lady Eda Clawthorne to become a witch, she can’t help but be drawn into the magic of the universe.
Despite initial resistance from Disney executives, the show’s creator, Dana Terrace (also bisexual), was open about her intentions to include queer characters in the series. The show features a well-developed lead character in Luz and a surprisingly fleshed out, gay couple in Amity and Lumity. Several other characters also make the cut, including Willow and Gus, two loving friends of Luz’s, and Raine Whispers, a nonbinary witch who uses they/them pronouns.
While it’s unfortunate that Disney canceled the show (seasons one through three are currently available on Disney+), it’s heartening to see how much progress can be made when companies allow their shows to tell LGBTQ+ stories without the need for them to be a “revolutionary” or “groundbreaking.” The Owl House proves that the right voices can change the world—even if they’re just animated.
