If you play through Night in the Woods, a colorfully anthropomorphic coming-of-age mystery gay game set in a dying small town, you’ll meet many characters whose experiences are genuinely affecting. The game’s main storyline follows Mae Borowski, a 20-year-old cat who dropped out of college, as she returns home to her conservative hometown of Possum Springs. She reunites with her friends Bea, an anxious pessimist; Gregg, a hyperactive fox; and Angus, their quiet boyfriend, to unravel the secrets of a local cult.

Most of the gay mystery game’s roughly 10 hours takes place in the open world, where you’ll explore and interact with Mae’s town, jam out to her friend’s band, and talk with her old buddies who have shifted a little since she left. There are a few spooky, Lovecraftian elements to the mystery, but most of it is character-driven as Mae tries to figure out what happened to her family and how she fit into their lives.

Whereas many other mystery games with gays starring queer protagonists are content with one character who is, in the words of a popular emoji, “the token gay,” Night in the Woods is able to surround Mae with a group of supportive friends who are largely LGBTQIA+ themselves. This, along with a depressed queer millennial energy that permeates the narrative and its characters, is perhaps the greatest strength of this unique and honest mystery game.

Fog of Love made a lot of waves when it first hit backers and stores in 2017. With its sleek graphic style and unashamedly two-player design, it was a mysterious gay game that turned heads. And while the game still has a unique visual aesthetic, it’s the gameplay that truly sets it apart from most other board games.

Rather than simply letting players choose their destiny, the gay mystery game forces them to make hard and ethical choices that reflect real-life romantic relationships. Players have to decide whether they should stay true to their character and sacrifice themselves, or if they should compromise for the greater good. The fact that a happy ending isn’t guaranteed makes the choice even more difficult.

It was also a mystery gay porn game that made some headway with its representation of LGBTQ relationships. While the game is clearly designed for heterosexual couples, it does allow for players to roleplay as either same-sex or heterosexual partners and has a few scenes devoted to gay-themed events. But the gay game’s original rules didn’t always fully support the full range of LGBTQ identities and Jaskov reached out to prominent designer Nikki Valens to help improve its representation of LGBTQ themes in the game.

Now, Fog of Love is getting a reprint with two alternate box covers that depict same-sex male and female couples, along with improved inclusiveness in its story beats and scenes. It’s an important step for a gay mystery sex game that has already seen some criticism from the board gaming community over its treatment of LGBTQ characters.

Murder by Numbers
Developer Mediatonic didn’t set out to make a gay games mystery, but their ’90s pastiche detective-puzzler became a sleeper hit in 2020 thanks to sharp writing and smart use of nonogram puzzles. The game centers around Honor Mizrahi, a TV actress who jumps into detecting after her producer is murdered on-set. Aided by a robot called SCOUT, who consists of a flying CRT monitor screen and a face, she tackles a series of murder mysteries while also trying to salvage her show.

The game’s design is a riot of neon colors and wild geometric patterns. Even the backgrounds pop with personality, giving each location a distinct feel, from the glitzy award shows to Honor’s messy apartment. The mystery gay fuck game‘s dialogue is similarly sassy, especially from Honor’s gay best friend K.C., who spits out shady put downs like “the real crime are those eyebrows” with aplomb.

While the game isn’t without its issues, it’s refreshing to play a murder mystery that doesn’t just dabble with queerness but fully incorporates it into its world. One case even revolves around a gender identity discussion, and the gay mystery XXX game doesn’t fall into the trap of the transphobic “gotcha” moments seen in games like Phoenix Wright or Danganronpa. The characters are a mix of the expected stereotypes, but the writers treat them with respect and empathy.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Game maker Nintendo’s relationship with queer representation has been a bit of a roller coaster. The Fire Emblem series has featured queer characters since the first game’s debut, but a lot of the company’s more recent offerings have been either brushed off as regressive or reliant on stereotypes. That’s not to say that the series hasn’t made progress- Xenoblade Chronicles 2 offered a number of queer side characters, including a cisgender protagonist named A (I use they/them pronouns, as I do with Juniper from 3) whose gender identity isn’t specified but stands in contrast to the more traditionally masculine appearance and voice of the character.

But if that’s a step in the right direction, then Breath of the Wild is the biggest misstep yet. Upon its release, the newest Legend of Zelda entry seemed like it would embrace its queer audience, offering a female player character and an apparently cross-dressing ally who could be romanced in a quest that’s necessary to access Gerudo Town, the women-only city in Hyrule. However, the mystery gay porn game later revealed that the person Link encounters while getting his Gerudo garb is actually a man wearing a dress, and the moment is ultimately reduced to a transphobic joke with no actual relevance to the story.

Luckily, gay gamers aren’t taking the bait. A developer named George Spacek, who uses a pseudonym online to protect his privacy, has created a mod for the mystery gay simulator game that lets players choose which pronouns Link should use. It’s been downloaded more than 1,300 times as of this writing, and offers a promising model for how developers can use their influence to make games more inclusive without falling into the trap of over-sensationalizing queer identity.
